About the Road Runner Sports Settlement

California residents who paid for a Road Runner Sports VIP Rewards membership between July 2013 and May 2025 may be eligible to participate in a recent class action settlement.

The court-approved agreement addresses allegations that the athletic store violated state law by hiding automatic renewal fees and making cancellations difficult.

Road Runner Sports Renewal and  Cancellation Issues Explained

The plaintiffs in this lawsuit made three allegations against Road Runner Sports and its VIP rewards membership program.

  • Failure to disclose clearly that memberships would automatically renew at prices ranging from $25.99 to $59.99 annually.
  • Hidden renewal fees during the initial sign-up process that cost $1.99 or more.
  • Complicated cancellation process when terminating memberships with the athletic retailer.

California's Automatic Renewal Law (CARL) typically requires businesses to disclose all renewal terms clearly before charging customers.

CARL also mandates that companies obtain affirmative consent before processing automatic subscription charges.

Road Runner Sports allegedly violated these requirements by charging renewal fees without consensual authorization.

VIP Rewards members' alleged experiences

Class plaintiffs say they discovered annual fees on their credit card statements months or even years after their initial VIP Membership purchase, but only noticed the charges when their banks flagged them as potentially fraudulent.

According to the lawsuit, membership fee refunds became particularly problematic for some customers when they attempted to cancel. Some Plaintiffs claimed they called Road Runner Sports customer service and received confirmation of cancellation, but continued seeing charges on their accounts.

This pattern of alleged billing problems led to numerous complaints with the Better Business Bureau and ultimately resulted in several individual lawsuits against the athletic retailer.

Who May Participate in the Road Runner Sports Settlement

Current and former VIP members may be eligible to take part in this settlement.

Enrolled VIP Rewards members

Consumers who hold active VIP Family Rewards memberships may have qualified for automatic benefits (see below).

Enrollment must have occurred in California between July 1, 2013, and May 1, 2025. Additionally, active members must have paid at least one renewal fee during their enrollment period.

Road Runner Sports has records of all active accounts, and the settlement administrator will use these records to distribute compensation automatically.

However, active VIP members must submit a claim form for additional compensation. The settlement also doesn't distinguish between VIP Family Rewards, VIP Plus, or VIP Platinum membership levels.

Formerly enrolled VIP Rewards members

Consumers who cancelled their VIP rewards membership during the class period may also qualify for benefits. Potential compensation would depend on when the membership ended.

Former class members may also be eligible for a free one-year VIP Family Rewards membership that won't automatically renew, addressing one of the core allegations in this lawsuit.

Potential Settlement Benefits Explained

Active VIP members may receive a two-tier benefit structure to compensate for past overcharges.

Automatic benefits (no action required):

  • $10 discount on next membership renewal.
  • $15 in rewards cash deposited directly into accounts.

Additional benefits (claim form required):

  • Extra $10 in rewards cash for a total of $25.
  • Must attest that Road Runner's practices caused you harm.
  • Submit claim by December 14, 2025.

Rewards cash generally expires six months after disbursement. Active members can use the funds for any Road Runner Sports online or in-store purchase.

Renewal discounts would apply automatically to billing cycles after final settlement approval.

Former member proposed compensation

The settlement recognizes that former VIP members may have cancelled due to frustration with Road Runner Sports' billing practices and proposes to compensate them as follows:

  • $15 Cash reward for memberships terminated after May 25, 2017.
  • $25 Cash reward for memberships terminated before May 26, 2017.
  • Complimentary 12-month VIP Family Rewards membership valued at $39.99.
  • No automatic renewal on the free membership
  • 10% discount on renewal and free shipping

The complimentary one-year VIP membership would activate automatically after the settlement receives final approval.

Agreed Changes from Road Runner Settlement

As part of the settlement agreement, Road Runner Sports agreed to implement significant changes to its business practices:

  • Display renewal costs prominently before customers complete their purchase.
  • Send two reminder emails before processing any automatic renewal charges.
  • Include a clear "decline" option during the checkout process.
  • Train staff to fully explain all membership terms and conditions.

The company agreed to these terms to prevent future automatic subscription issues.

This settlement provides potential relief for current and former Road Runner Sports VIP members. Beyond offering fair financial remedies, the agreement also establishes stronger transparency requirements to protect consumers from renewal and billing issues in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

NO. You don't need a receipt or proof of purchase to file your claim. Road Runner Sports maintains records of all VIP members who were charged renewal fees between July 2013 and May 2025. Simply provide your membership number if available, or the settlement administrator can locate your account using your name and address from their database.

Even without filing a claim, former members will still receive automatic benefits (free membership and $15-$25 in rewards cash). However, currently enrolled members who miss the deadline will only receive the automatic $10 renewal discount and $15 in rewards cash, forfeiting the additional $10 available through the claim process.

YES. Participating in the settlement doesn't affect your ability to shop at Road Runner Sports or use your VIP membership benefits. The settlement only resolves past claims about automatic renewal practices, and you can continue using any rewards, cash, or membership benefits you receive as part of the compensation.

Excluding yourself means you won't receive any settlement benefits but retain your right to sue Road Runner Sports individually over these claims. Objecting means you remain in the settlement and receive benefits, but formally express concerns about the terms to the court, which will consider objections at the November 14, 2025, hearing.
