Fandango Movie Ticket Fee Class Action Settlement

Are you a fan of going to the movies? If you have purchased a movie ticket online recently, you may have noticed an increase in cost. In a major development, Fandango, a popular online movie ticketing platform, has settled a class-action lawsuit, and you could be entitled to compensation.

The lawsuit, filed by consumers who allege they were overcharged misleading fees, has been ongoing for several years. The settlement aims to compensate affected consumers and increase transparency in Fandango’s pricing practices.

What’s the Settlement About?

The Fandango Movie Ticket Fee Settlement is a $9 million class action lawsuit that claims Fandango did not properly communicate a convenience fee for online tickets to movie theaters in New York State. As a result, consumers were surprised by the final total at checkout. This allegation violates the New York Arts and Cultural Affairs Law.

The convenience fee ranges between $1 and $3 per ticket, with the lawsuit claiming it was not shown until after the consumer selected their movie ticket and went through the payment process.

Fandango, which sells tickets to theaters like Regal, AMC, and Cinemark, has denied wrongdoing. However, they have decided to settle the lawsuit to avoid prolonged litigation and legal costs.

What Is the New York Arts and Cultural Affairs Law?

The New York Arts and Cultural Affairs Law (NYACAL) is a set of laws that govern various aspects of the arts, culture, and entertainment industries within the state of New York.

Its legislation serves museums, theaters, galleries, cultural institutions, individuals, and businesses engaged in artistic and cultural activities. Focusing on a wide range of topics, the law aims to protect cultural assets and the rights of artists and regulates cultural and artistic organizations.

Who Qualifies and How Much Can You Claim?

You may be eligible for a payout if you paid a convenience fee to purchase movie tickets online to any movie in any movie theater located within New York state from Fandango’s website, mobile phone app, or any other Fandango owned or operated online platform between August 22, 2022, to March 11, 2024. This applies to all individuals who purchased a ticket—US residency is not required to submit a claim.

To be eligible to submit a claim, you’ll need the following proof:

  • Proof of Unique ID and Confirmation Code: You’ll need to show proof of your Fandango unique ID and confirmation code on the notice you received by email. If you did not receive this information, you can contact a Fandango settlement administrator to verify your identity and receive further information on how to file a claim.

If eligible, you should receive either a $5.00 cash payment, a $10.00 coupon, or a voucher for “Fandango at Home,” depending on the terms of payment you select when filing a claim form.
